Tips for teachers and parents
- In each word problem, find the number of groups and the size of each group. "4 tables with 6 chairs each" is 4 groups of 6.
- Ask students to draw a quick array or groups of dots for the first word problem, then use facts for the rest.
- Part A is a mixed review. Note which facts slow students down and send them to that times table sheet.
- Read one word problem aloud as a class before students start on their own.
Common mistakes
- Adding the two numbers in a word problem, such as 4 + 6 for 4 tables of 6 chairs. Ask "how many groups, and how many in each?"
- Swapping a slow fact for a guess. Students can skip-count for any fact they do not know yet.
