Tips for teachers and parents
- Division stories come in two kinds. "Shared equally among 6 bowls" asks how many in each group; "6 on each plate" asks how many groups. Both are division.
- Ask students to write the matching multiplication fact next to each answer as a check.
- Encourage a quick sketch for the first story: circles for the plates, tally marks for the cookies.
- Use Part A to spot shaky facts, then practice those divisors on the single-divisor sheets.
Common mistakes
- Multiplying the two numbers in a sharing story. Ask "is the big number being split up?"
- Swapping the numbers, such as 6 ÷ 42. Remind students the total always comes first.
What to practice next
Students who finish quickly can write their own Thanksgiving division story for a partner to solve.
