Tips for teachers and parents
- Part A alternates addition and subtraction. Ask students to read each sign before writing.
- For each word problem, ask "are we putting together or taking away?" before any numbers are written.
- Have students write the number sentence next to each story, such as 46 + 28 = ___, then solve it.
- Several word problems need regrouping. Students can solve them in the margin with the column method.
Common mistakes
- Adding in a "how many are left" problem because both numbers are visible. Underline the question in each story.
- Solving a "how many more cans are needed" problem by adding. Point out that it compares a goal with what is already there.
