How to use these worksheets
Pictures first
Start with shaded shapes and number lines so students see a fraction as an amount before they work with the numbers alone.
Two ways to compare
Same denominator: compare the tops. Same numerator: the bigger denominator means smaller pieces. Practice both and mix them.
Keep the denominator
When adding or subtracting fractions with like denominators, only the number of pieces changes. The size of the pieces stays the same.
