Tips for teachers and parents
- Read the word problems aloud for early readers. The math is the point, not the reading.
- Let students use counters, fingers or a quick drawing for the stories. Drawing 7 pies and 4 more pies is a perfectly good strategy.
- In Part A the signs alternate. Ask students to circle the sign before they start each fact.
- For the "how many are left" stories, act them out with a handful of small objects.
Common mistakes
- Adding when the story takes something away. Ask "do we end up with more or fewer?"
- Counting the starting number twice when counting on. For 7 + 4, start at 7 and count 8, 9, 10, 11.
