Tips for teachers and parents

  • Part A switches between adding and subtracting. Have students check the sign before each problem.
  • Every Part A problem regroups, so this is a good check on whether regrouping has stuck.
  • For the word problems, ask students to write the number sentence first, like 29 + 39 = ___, then solve it in columns in the margin.
  • Check subtraction by adding the answer to the number taken away.

Common mistakes

  • Subtracting the smaller digit from the larger one in the ones column instead of regrouping.
  • Forgetting to add the carried ten in addition.
