Tips for teachers and parents

  • In each story, find the number of groups and the size of each group. "5 boxes with 8 ornaments in each" is 5 groups of 8.
  • Let students sketch the first story as an array, then solve the rest with facts.
  • Use Part A as a quick fact check before winter break and note which tables need review in January.
  • Read one story aloud together before students start on their own.

Common mistakes

  • Adding the two numbers in a story. Ask "how many groups, and how many in each?"
  • Guessing a fact under time pressure. Students can skip-count any fact they do not know yet.

What to practice next

Try the Christmas division sheet, which turns the same kinds of stories around.
