Tips for teachers and parents

  • Ask: which two thousands is this number between? 8,157 is between 8,000 and 9,000.
  • Only the hundreds digit decides. If it is 0 to 4, round down; if it is 5 to 9, round up.
  • Numbers ending in exactly 500 are halfway and round up, so 2,500 rounds to 3,000.
  • For 5-digit numbers, cover everything to the left of the thousands digit with a finger. 54,762 rounds the same way as 4,762, to 55,000.

Common mistakes

  • Looking at the tens or ones digit instead of the hundreds digit. In 1,358 the 5 and 8 do not matter; the 3 in the hundreds place says round down to 1,000.
  • Writing 0,000 or 1,000 for a number like 9,558. When the thousands digit is 9 and rounds up, it becomes the next ten thousand: 10,000.

What to practice next

Round 5- and 6-digit numbers to any place, from the nearest hundred to the nearest hundred thousand.

Frequently asked questions

How do you round to the nearest 1000?
