Tips for teachers and parents
- Have your student say each digit's value aloud: "the 5 is worth 500, the 2 is worth 20, the 7 is worth 7."
- A place value chart with hundreds, tens and ones columns makes Part A easier for students who are still learning.
- In Part B, students can line up the three numbers and add them, or simply read the hundreds, tens and ones digits.
- Ask how many zeros go after each digit: none in the ones place, one in the tens place, two in the hundreds place.
Common mistakes
- Writing the digits instead of their values, such as 5 + 2 + 7 for 527.
- Adding too many zeros, for example writing 20 as 200. Checking that the parts add back to the number catches this.
What to practice next
Rounding to the nearest 10 and 100 builds on knowing what each digit is worth.
Frequently asked questions
What is expanded form?
Writing a number as the sum of its place values. 384 in expanded form is 300 + 80 + 4.
Do any numbers have a zero digit?
No. Every number on this sheet has three non-zero digits so that each part of the expanded form has a value to write.
