Tips for teachers and parents
- Same method, one more column: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, carrying whenever a column reaches 10.
- Keep the digits in straight columns. With up to five digits in an answer, lined paper turned sideways makes neat columns.
- Estimate to the nearest thousand first: 5,846 + 2,379 is about 6,000 + 2,000 = 8,000.
- Ask students to check one problem by adding in the other order. The answer should match.
Common mistakes
- Dropping a carry when two columns in a row need one. Say each carry out loud.
- Leaving out the final carry, so a five-digit answer is written with four digits. If the thousands add to 10 or more, write both digits.
What to practice next
Practice 4-digit subtraction, then try multi-step word problems that use both.
Frequently asked questions
