Tips for teachers and parents
- Ask: which two hundreds is this number between? 438 is between 400 and 500.
- Look at the tens digit to decide. If it is 0 to 4, round down; if it is 5 to 9, round up.
- Numbers ending in 50 are exactly halfway and round up, so 350 rounds to 400.
- For 4-digit numbers, keep the thousands digit and round the hundreds in the same way: 2,591 rounds to 2,600.
Common mistakes
- Looking at the ones digit instead of the tens digit. For 449, the 9 does not matter; the 4 in the tens place says round down to 400.
- Rounding to the nearest 10 by habit, such as writing 440 for 438.
What to practice next
Use rounding to estimate sums: 438 + 271 is about 400 + 300 = 700.
Frequently asked questions
How do you round to the nearest 100?
Look at the tens digit. If it is 0 to 4, round down to the hundred below; if it is 5 to 9, round up to the next hundred.
Why are there 4-digit numbers on a grade 3 sheet?
The six numbers in Part B use the same rule with a larger number. They are good extra practice for students who finish Part A quickly.
