Tips for teachers and parents
- Ask: which two tens is this number between? For 67, it is between 60 and 70.
- Then ask which one it is closer to. A quick number line from 60 to 70 shows that 67 is closer to 70.
- Numbers ending in 5 are exactly halfway. The rule is to round up, so 65 rounds to 70.
- For 3-digit numbers, only the tens and ones matter: 734 rounds to 730 because 34 is closer to 30 than 40.
Common mistakes
- Rounding 5s down. Practice the halfway rule with a few examples like 25, 45 and 85.
- Changing the hundreds digit by mistake, such as rounding 734 to 700. That is rounding to the nearest 100.
What to practice next
Rounding to the nearest 100 uses the same steps with the hundreds.
