Tips for teachers and parents

  • Find the rounding place first and underline it. Then look at the one digit just to its right: 0 to 4 rounds down, 5 to 9 rounds up.
  • Every digit to the right of the rounding place becomes zero. Every digit to the left stays the same, unless a 9 rounds up.
  • Read the number aloud first, such as "688 thousand, 623". Saying the places helps students find the right digit.
  • Part D is the quickest check of the idea: for the nearest hundred thousand only the first two digits of a 6-digit number matter.

Common mistakes

  • Using the wrong deciding digit, such as looking at the hundreds digit when rounding to the nearest 10,000. Point to the rounding place, then move exactly one place right.
  • Dropping digits instead of writing zeros, such as writing 69 for 688,623 rounded to the nearest 10,000. The answer is 690,000 and keeps its size.

What to practice next

Use rounding to estimate multi-digit addition and subtraction before working the exact answer.

Frequently asked questions

How do you round multi-digit numbers to any place?

Find the place you are rounding to and look at the digit to its right. If that digit is 5 or more, add one to the rounding place; if it is 4 or less, keep it. Then change every digit to the right into a zero.

What grade learns rounding to the nearest hundred thousand?

Grade 4. Common Core 4.NBT.A.3 asks students to use place value to round multi-digit whole numbers, up to 1,000,000, to any place.
