Tips for teachers and parents
- When the ones add to 10 or more, write the ones digit below and carry the ten. In 47 + 38, 7 + 8 = 15: write 5, carry 1.
- Write the carried 1 small above the tens column so it is not forgotten.
- Add the carry together with the tens digits: 1 + 4 + 3 = 8 tens, so the answer is 85.
- When the tens add to 10 or more, the answer has three digits. 68 + 57 = 125 is correct, not a mistake.
Common mistakes
- Writing both digits of the ones sum in the answer, so 47 + 38 becomes 715. Show that only one digit fits in each column.
- Forgetting to add the carried ten. Ask the student to circle each carry after using it.

Frequently asked questions
What is regrouping in addition?
When a column adds to 10 or more, ten ones become one ten and move to the next column. It is also called carrying.
Why do some answers have three digits?
When the tens column also adds to 10 or more, the extra ten tens make a hundred. 75 + 48 = 123.
