Tips for teachers and parents
- Let beginners use fingers or counters for Part A, then try Part B without them. Moving from counting to knowing is the goal.
- Teach "count on from the bigger number." For 2 + 7, start at 7 and count 8, 9.
- Practice the pairs that make 10 on their own: 1 + 9, 2 + 8, 3 + 7, 4 + 6 and 5 + 5. They come back in every later addition skill.
- Point out that adding 0 leaves a number the same, so problems with 0 are quick wins.
Common mistakes
- Counting the starting number again, so 6 + 3 becomes 8. Show counting on as "6 in my head, then 7, 8, 9."
- Writing numbers backwards, such as a reversed 3 or 7. Accept the math and practice the numeral separately.
