Tips for teachers and parents

  • Point out the two kinds of division stories: "shared equally among 6 bags" asks how many in each; "piles of 6" asks how many piles.
  • Ask students to write the matching multiplication fact beside each answer as a check.
  • For the first story, a quick sketch of plates or bags helps students see the sharing.
  • Use Part A to find divisors that need more practice before the new year.

Common mistakes

  • Multiplying the numbers in a sharing story. Ask "is the big number being split up?"
  • Writing the numbers in the wrong order, such as 5 ÷ 30. The total always comes first.

What to practice next

Fast finishers can write a Christmas division story with their own numbers for a partner.
