Tips for teachers and parents

  • Work right to left: ones, tens, hundreds.
  • Keep columns straight. A light pencil line between columns helps young students.
  • Read each answer aloud as a whole number. It catches digits written in the wrong column.
  • Check by adding the answer to the bottom number.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping the tens column when its answer is 0, so 586 − 382 becomes 24 instead of 204. Remind students that every column gets a digit.
  • Mixing up which number is on top when copying a problem. Ask students to copy carefully or work directly on the sheet.

Frequently asked questions

How do you subtract 3 digit numbers without regrouping?

Subtract the ones, then the tens, then the hundreds. 758 − 324 = 434.

Why do some answers have a 0 in the middle?

When the tens digits are the same, the tens answer is 0. 675 − 271 = 404, and the 0 must be written.
