Tips for teachers and parents
- Subtract the ones first, then the tens, just as in addition.
- Say the tens as tens: in 68 − 25, "6 tens take away 2 tens is 4 tens."
- Use base-ten blocks for the first few problems: build the top number, then remove the bottom one.
- Check by adding the answer to the bottom number. 43 + 25 should give 68.
Common mistakes
- Subtracting across instead of down, such as 6 − 8 in 68 − 25. Draw a line between the columns.
- Starting in the tens column. It works here, but it causes errors once regrouping begins.

Frequently asked questions
What does subtraction without regrouping mean?
In each column the top digit is greater than or equal to the bottom digit, so nothing needs to be borrowed. 86 − 52 = 34 is an example.
How should my child check the answers?
Add the answer to the number being subtracted. The result should be the top number.
Is there an answer key?
Yes, on page 2 of the PDF.
