Tips for teachers and parents
- Work right to left: ones, tens, hundreds. Say each place out loud the first few times.
- Line up the digits carefully. Graph paper or a sheet with drawn columns helps students who write large.
- Read the answer as a whole number afterwards: "four hundred seventy-eight." Reading it catches digits in the wrong place.
- Estimate with hundreds: 412 + 356 is about 400 + 400 = 800.
Common mistakes
- Skipping a column, so 214 + 352 becomes 56 or 566 with a missing digit. Point to each column as you go.
- Mixing up place names when reading answers. Use a place value chart above the problem for the first sheet.
