These are the first subtraction facts: every problem starts from 10 or less. The sheet has 30 problems in two short parts and takes most first graders about 8 minutes.

Tips for teachers and parents
- Start with objects. For 7 − 3, put out 7 counters, take 3 away and count what is left.
- Teach "count back" for small numbers: 9 − 2 is 9, then 8, 7.
- Connect each problem to addition. 8 − 5 = 3 because 3 + 5 = 8. The check in Part B uses this.
- Practice "10 minus" facts on their own: 10 − 1 to 10 − 9. They pair with the make-ten addition facts.
Common mistakes
- Counting the starting number when counting back, so 6 − 2 becomes 5. Show counting back as "6 in my head, then 5, 4."
- Adding instead of subtracting after an addition sheet. Ask the student to point to the minus sign before each row.
