Tips for teachers and parents

  • Check each column before subtracting: if the top digit is smaller, regroup from the column to its left.
  • Regroup one column at a time. In 724 − 386, regroup for the ones first, then look at the tens again.
  • After borrowing, write the new digits clearly above the old ones and cross out the old ones.
  • Check by adding the answer to the bottom number.

Common mistakes

  • Borrowing for the ones and then forgetting the tens column has changed. Ask students to read the tens digit again after crossing it out.
  • Taking the smaller digit from the larger in a column instead of regrouping. Checking by adding catches this.

What to practice next

Practice subtracting across zeros, the hardest type of regrouping.

Frequently asked questions

How do you subtract 3 digit numbers with regrouping?

Work from the ones column left. Whenever a top digit is too small, trade one from the next column on the left for ten in this column.

Can a problem need two regroups?

Yes. Many problems here regroup in both the ones and tens columns.

Which standard does this cover?

Common Core 2.NBT.B.7 and 3.NBT.A.2, subtracting within 1,000 using place value.
