Tips for teachers and parents
- Work right to left and check each column before subtracting: regroup whenever the top digit is smaller.
- Write new digits clearly above crossed-out ones. With four columns, a messy regroup is the most common source of errors.
- Estimate first by rounding to the nearest thousand: 7,312 − 2,689 is about 7,000 − 3,000 = 4,000.
- Check by adding the answer to the bottom number.
Common mistakes
- Losing track after two or three regroups in a row. Ask students to finish one column fully before looking at the next.
- Subtracting the smaller digit from the larger in a column. The addition check will not match if this happens.
What to practice next
Combine 4-digit addition and subtraction in multi-step word problems.
Frequently asked questions
What grade learns 4 digit subtraction?
Grade 4. Common Core 4.NBT.B.4 asks students to fluently subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
Do all problems need regrouping?
Most do. A few may not, which lets students practice deciding when to regroup.
Is there an answer key?
Yes, on page 2 of the PDF.
