Tips for teachers and parents

  • Use the same steps as 2-digit regrouping in each column: add, write the ones digit, carry the ten.
  • Expect a carry to land in a column that also needs one. In 368 + 275, both the ones and tens carry.
  • Students who struggle can write the partial sums first: 300 + 200, 60 + 70, 8 + 5, then add the three results.
  • Check with an estimate to the nearest hundred.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting a carry in the middle column. Have students cross out each carried digit once it has been added.
  • Treating a 4-digit answer as wrong. 785 + 467 = 1,252 is correct.

What to practice next

Try 4-digit addition, or practice 3-digit subtraction with regrouping.

Frequently asked questions

How do you add 3 digit numbers with regrouping?

Add each column from right to left. When a column adds to 10 or more, write the ones digit and carry the ten to the next column.

Can a 3 digit addition answer have 4 digits?

Yes. When the hundreds add to 10 or more, the answer is in the thousands, such as 600 + 500 = 1,100.

Which standard does this cover?

Common Core 2.NBT.B.7 and 3.NBT.A.2, adding within 1,000 using place value.
