Tips for teachers and parents
- Same method as 4-digit addition, just more columns: add right to left and carry whenever a column reaches 10.
- Read each number aloud with its place value, such as "385 thousand, 938", before adding. It helps students keep track of the columns.
- Estimate to the nearest hundred thousand in Part B: 385,938 + 204,612 is about 400,000 + 200,000 = 600,000.
- Graph paper or lined paper turned sideways keeps six columns of digits straight.
Common mistakes
- Skipping a carry in the middle of a long row of columns. Ask students to write each carried 1 above the next column before adding it.
- Leaving out the final carry, so a sum like 163,040 is written as 63,040. If the last column makes 10 or more, write both digits.
What to practice next
Practice multi-digit subtraction with 5- and 6-digit numbers.
