Ordering Numbers Worksheet

Twelve sets of four numbers to put in order from least to greatest. Part A uses 2-digit numbers and Part B uses 3-digit numbers. Several 3-digit sets include numbers with the same hundreds digit, so students have to look at the tens and ones too.

Tips for teachers and parents

  • Ask your student to find the smallest number first, write it, and cross it out. Then repeat with what is left.
  • Compare by place from the left: hundreds, then tens, then ones.
  • For students who find four numbers at once hard, let them write each number on a scrap of paper and physically sort them.
  • When done, read the order aloud and check that each number is bigger than the one before.

Common mistakes

  • Ordering by the last digit, which puts 98 before 31.
  • Missing a number or copying one twice. Counting the answers (there should be four) catches this.

What to practice next

Comparing numbers with <, > and = gives more practice with the same place value thinking.
