Tips for teachers and parents

  • Read the word problems aloud for early readers. The math is the point, not the reading.
  • Let students use counters, fingers or a quick drawing for the stories. Drawing 8 cookies and 5 more cookies is a perfectly good strategy.
  • In Part A the signs alternate. Ask students to circle the sign before they start each fact.
  • For the "how many are left" stories, act them out with a handful of small objects, like real candy canes or paper ornaments.

Common mistakes

  • Adding when the story takes something away. Ask "do we end up with more or fewer?"
  • Counting the starting number twice when counting on. For 8 + 5, start at 8 and count 9, 10, 11, 12, 13.

What to practice next

The 2nd grade Christmas sheet moves on to 2-digit numbers with regrouping.
