Tips for teachers and parents
- Part A switches between adding and subtracting. Have students check the sign before each problem.
- Every problem on the sheet regroups, so it is a good check on whether regrouping has stuck before winter break.
- For the word problems, ask students to write the number sentence first, then solve it in columns in the margin.
- Check subtraction by adding the answer to the number taken away.
Common mistakes
- Subtracting the smaller digit from the larger one in the ones column instead of regrouping. Ask "can I take this many ones from the top number?"
- Forgetting to add the regrouped ten in addition. Have students write the small 1 above the tens column every time.
What to practice next
The 3rd grade Christmas word problems move on to multiplication and division.
