Tips for teachers and parents

  • In Part A, remind students to write the zero placeholder in the second row before multiplying by the tens digit.
  • For division by a 2-digit number, writing out a few multiples of the divisor first saves a lot of guessing.
  • Ask students to estimate every word problem answer before working it out.
  • Part B mixes operations, so students should underline the question and decide what to do before calculating.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving out the zero placeholder in 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication, which makes the second partial product ten times too small.
  • Bringing down two digits at once in long division. Bring down one digit, divide, multiply, subtract, then bring down the next.
