Tips for teachers and parents

  • For the word problems, ask students to decide the operation and estimate the answer before calculating.
  • Part B mixes all four operations. Underlining the question in each story helps.
  • Division answers in Part B come out exactly, with no remainders.
  • Check multiplication with a quick estimate: 487 × 6 is about 500 × 6 = 3000.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting to add the carried digit after multiplying the next place.
  • Lining up 4-digit addition and subtraction by the left digits instead of the right.
