Tips for teachers and parents

  • Work right to left, one column at a time: ones, then tens, then hundreds. Each column is a multiply-then-add-the-carry step.
  • Expect two carries in many problems. In 368 × 4, both the ones and the tens produce a carry.
  • Check with an estimate by rounding the 3-digit number to the nearest hundred: 368 × 4 is close to 400 × 4 = 1,600.
  • For students who struggle, show the same problem in expanded form: 300 × 4 + 60 × 4 + 8 × 4.

Common mistakes

  • Losing a carry in the middle column. Ask the student to cross out each carried digit after adding it.
  • Writing the final hundreds product in the wrong place. In 368 × 4, the last step gives 14 hundreds, so the answer is 1,472, with 14 written in full on the left.

What to practice next

Move on to 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication, where students multiply by the tens digit and add two partial products.

Frequently asked questions

How do you multiply a 3-digit number by a 1-digit number?

Multiply the ones, tens and hundreds in turn, from right to left, adding any carried number after each multiplication.

What is a good way to check the answers?

Round the 3-digit number to the nearest hundred and multiply. The real answer should be close to that estimate.

Which standard does this worksheet cover?

Common Core 4.NBT.B.5, which includes multiplying numbers up to four digits by a one-digit number.
