4 Digit Addition and Subtraction With Regrouping
This 4th grade sheet has 15 stacked problems with two 4-digit numbers each, with addition and subtraction in random order. Every problem needs regrouping in at least one column, so students practice carrying and borrowing on the same page and have to read each sign first. Some sums go past 9,999 and have five digits.

Tips for teachers and parents
- Ask students to circle every minus sign before they start. It takes a minute and prevents most mix-ups on mixed addition and subtraction sheets.
- Use it after the 4-digit addition and 4-digit subtraction sheets, as a check that both methods are secure.
- Estimate each answer to the nearest thousand first, and compare when the problem is done.
- Check subtraction by adding the answer to the bottom number, and addition by adding in the other order.
Common mistakes
- Carrying in a subtraction problem or borrowing in an addition problem. The circled signs make these easy to spot when marking.
- Writing only four digits when a sum reaches 10,000 or more. If the thousands column makes 10 or more, write both digits.
What to practice next
Use the same skills in context with the 4-digit addition and subtraction word problems.
Frequently asked questions
Do all problems need regrouping?
Yes. Every addition problem needs at least one carry and every subtraction problem needs at least one borrow.
Why mix addition and subtraction on one worksheet?
Students have to read the sign of each problem instead of working on autopilot, which is what tests and real problems require.
Is there an answer key?
Yes, page 2 of the PDF shows all 15 answers.
