Part A: Doubles Add. Each problem adds a number to itself.

  1. 1 + 1 = 2
  2. 2 + 2 = 4
  3. 3 + 3 = 6
  4. 4 + 4 = 8
  5. 5 + 5 = 10
  6. 6 + 6 = 12
  7. 7 + 7 = 14
  8. 8 + 8 = 16
  9. 9 + 9 = 18
  10. 10 + 10 = 20
  11. 11 + 11 = 22
  12. 12 + 12 = 24

Part B: Near doubles Add. Use the double, then add one more.

  1. 9 + 8 = 17
  2. 4 + 3 = 7
  3. 12 + 11 = 23
  4. 7 + 6 = 13
  5. 8 + 7 = 15
  6. 13 + 12 = 25
  7. 6 + 5 = 11
  8. 10 + 9 = 19
  9. 2 + 3 = 5
  10. 11 + 10 = 21
  11. 5 + 4 = 9
  12. 2 + 1 = 3

Part C: Mixed Add. Spot the double first.

  1. 4 + 4 = 8
  2. 2 + 2 = 4
  3. 6 + 5 = 11
  4. 7 + 7 = 14
  5. 9 + 8 = 17
  6. 3 + 2 = 5

Tips for teachers and parents

  • Learn the doubles in Part A first, out loud and in order: 1 + 1 = 2 up to 12 + 12 = 24.
  • For near doubles, find the double hiding inside. 8 + 9 is 8 + 8 = 16, plus one more: 17.
  • Point out that every double is an even number. If a doubles answer is odd, it is wrong.
  • Doubles lead straight into the 2 times table: 7 + 7 is the same as 2 × 7.

Common mistakes

  • Adding one to the wrong number in a near double, then counting the extra twice. Have the student say the double first, then "plus one."
  • Mixing up 6 + 6 = 12 and 7 + 7 = 14. Use real objects: an egg carton holds 6 + 6, and two weeks hold 7 + 7 days.

Frequently asked questions

What are near doubles in math?

Two numbers that are one apart, such as 5 + 6. Students solve them by using the double, 5 + 5, and adding one more.

Why should children learn doubles?

Doubles are easy to remember, and they give a quick route to many harder facts. They also prepare students for multiplying by 2.

Does the sheet go past 10 + 10?

Yes. Part A covers doubles up to 12 + 12 = 24.
