Tips for teachers and parents
- Ask students to circle every minus sign before they start. It takes one minute and prevents most mix-ups.
- Use it after both the addition and subtraction regrouping sheets, as a check that each method is secure on its own.
- For subtraction, compare the ones first: if the top digit is smaller, regroup before subtracting.
- Check subtraction answers by adding: the answer plus the bottom number should give the top number.
Common mistakes
- Adding when the problem says subtract, or the reverse. The circled signs make these easy to spot when marking.
- Carrying in a subtraction problem, such as writing a small 1 above the tens. Remind students that subtraction borrows from the next column instead.

Frequently asked questions
Why mix addition and subtraction on one worksheet?
On single-operation sheets students can work on autopilot. Mixing them makes students read each problem, which is what tests and real problems require.
Do all problems need regrouping?
Yes. Every addition problem needs a carry and every subtraction problem needs a borrow.
Is the answer key included?
Yes, on page 2 of the PDF.
