Telling Time to the Hour and Half Hour Worksheet

A first grade telling time sheet. In Part A students read 12 analog clocks showing times on the hour (like 3:00) and the half hour (like 3:30). In Part B they draw the hour and minute hands on 4 blank clocks. The answer key on page 2 shows every time and every pair of hands.

Tips for teachers and parents

  • Start with the short hand. Ask "which number is the hour hand pointing to, or just past?" before looking at the long hand.
  • On the hour, the long hand points straight up at the 12. At half past, it points straight down at the 6.
  • At half past, the hour hand sits halfway between two numbers. For 3:30 it is between the 3 and the 4, and the hour is still 3.
  • Practice with a real clock at home: say the time aloud at breakfast, lunch and bedtime.

Common mistakes

  • Reading the hour from the number the hour hand is moving towards. At 3:30 the hand is between 3 and 4, so the hour is 3, not 4.
  • Mixing up the two hands. Have students trace the short hand in one color and the long hand in another for the first few clocks.

What to practice next

Once hours and half hours are secure, move to the quarter hour worksheet with 15 and 45 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

What times are on this worksheet?

Only times on the hour (:00) and the half hour (:30), about half of each, matching the grade 1 standard.

Why does the hour hand not point exactly at a number at half past?

The hour hand moves slowly all hour long, so halfway through the hour it is halfway to the next number. The clocks on this sheet show the hands where a real clock would.

Is there an answer key?

Yes, page 2 shows every time written out and the correct hands drawn in red.
