Tips for teachers and parents
- Link the clock to fractions: the face is split into four quarters, and each quarter is 15 minutes.
- Learn the four minute-hand positions first: 12 is :00, 3 is :15, 6 is :30, 9 is :45.
- Then read the hour from the short hand. At :45 the hour hand is close to the next number but has not reached it yet.
- Say each time two ways, such as "4:15" and "quarter past 4", so students recognize both.
Common mistakes
- Reading the minute hand on the 3 as 3 minutes instead of 15. Counting by 5s around the clock to the 3 shows why it is 15.
- At :45, naming the next hour because the hour hand is almost there. 4:45 is still in the 4 o'clock hour.
What to practice next
Telling time to 5 minutes uses every number on the clock face.
