Tips for teachers and parents
- Count by 5s around the clock with your student: 1 is 5 minutes, 2 is 10, 3 is 15, and so on up to 11 is 55.
- Read the hour hand first, then the minute hand. Writing the hour before the minutes keeps the two hands from getting mixed up.
- For times late in the hour, like 8:55, the hour hand is almost at the 9 but the hour is still 8.
- Skip counting by 5s is a big help here. If counting by 5s is still slow, practice it on its own for a few days.
Common mistakes
- Writing the number the minute hand points to as the minutes, such as 8:4 instead of 8:20.
- Forgetting the zero in times like 1:05. Remind students that minutes always have two digits.
What to practice next
Telling time to the nearest minute counts the small marks between the numbers.
