Rounding Decimals Worksheet
This 5th grade sheet has 24 problems. In Part A, students round 12 decimals (6 in tenths, 6 in hundredths) to the nearest whole number. In Part B, they round 12 decimals in hundredths to the nearest tenth. Both parts include halfway numbers such as 1.5 and 6.35, numbers like 9.6 and 19.98 that round up into the next whole number, and Part A has two numbers like 10.46 that test the habit of rounding twice.

Tips for teachers and parents
- To round to the nearest whole number, look only at the tenths digit. To round to the nearest tenth, look only at the hundredths digit.
- Halfway numbers round up: 1.5 rounds to 2 and 6.35 rounds to 6.4.
- When rounding to the nearest tenth, keep one decimal place in the answer, even if it is a zero: 19.98 rounds to 20.0.
- A number line helps: 2.42 sits between 2.4 and 2.5, and it is much closer to 2.4.
Common mistakes
- Rounding twice. 10.46 rounds to 10, not 11, because the tenths digit is 4. Rounding 10.46 to 10.5 first and then up to 11 gives the wrong answer.
- Forgetting to carry when a 9 rounds up. 8.98 to the nearest tenth is 9.0, not 8.10.
What to practice next
Practice adding decimals, and estimate each sum first by rounding to the nearest whole number.
Frequently asked questions
How do you round decimals to the nearest tenth?
Look at the hundredths digit. If it is 0 to 4, keep the tenths digit; if it is 5 to 9, add one to the tenths digit. Then drop the hundredths.
How do you round a decimal to the nearest whole number?
Look at the tenths digit. If it is 5 or more, round up to the next whole number; if it is 4 or less, keep the whole number part.
Is there an answer key?
Yes, page 2 of the PDF is the answer key for all 24 problems. Answers rounded to the nearest tenth are written with one decimal place, such as 20.0.
