Multiplying Decimals Worksheet
Eighteen decimal multiplication problems for fifth grade. Part A multiplies a decimal by a whole number, written in columns. Part B multiplies two decimals, like 0.8 × 4.8 and 3.6 × 4.4, and every answer goes no further than hundredths. The answer key on page 2 shows every product.

Part A: Decimal × whole number Multiply as if there were no decimal point, then place it.
- 1.47× 34.41
- 11.8× 223.6
- 35.8× 271.6
- 30.6× 391.8
- 16.2× 8129.6
- 4.7× 29.4
- 30.89× 9278.01
- 9.9× 329.7
Part B: Decimal × decimal Count the decimal places in both numbers to place the point.
- 1.1 × 4.7 = 5.17
- 9.4 × 0.5 = 4.7
- 9.2 × 4.6 = 42.32
- 5.7 × 0.4 = 2.28
- 2.8 × 2.1 = 5.88
- 3.1 × 2.2 = 6.82
- 5.8 × 3.5 = 20.3
- 2.7 × 4.9 = 13.23
- 7.7 × 3.6 = 27.72
- 6.4 × 3.9 = 24.96
Tips for teachers and parents
- Multiply as if the decimal points were not there: 0.8 × 4.8 is worked out as 8 × 48 = 384.
- Then count the decimal places in both numbers together. 0.8 has one and 4.8 has one, so the answer has two: 3.84.
- Estimate to check. 0.8 × 4.8 is a bit less than 1 × 5 = 5, so 3.84 makes sense and 38.4 does not.
- Unlike adding, the decimal points do not need to line up when multiplying.
Common mistakes
- Lining up the decimal points as if adding, then placing the point in the wrong spot.
- Counting decimal places in only one of the two numbers.
What to practice next
Dividing decimals by whole numbers is the next step.
Frequently asked questions
How do you multiply decimals?
Multiply the numbers as whole numbers, then count the total number of decimal places in both factors and put that many places in the answer.
Why does the answer get smaller when you multiply by 0.8?
Multiplying by a number less than 1 means taking only part of the other number. 0.8 × 4.8 is eight tenths of 4.8, which is less than 4.8.
Is there an answer key?
Yes, page 2 has every product.
