Multiplying Multiples of 10 Worksheet

This 4th grade sheet has 30 problems in which both factors end in zero or one factor is a multiple of 10. Part A multiplies tens by tens, Part B hundreds by tens, Part C 2-digit numbers by tens, and Part D asks for a missing factor. Several problems have a basic fact that ends in zero, like 50 × 40 = 2,000.

Part A: Tens times tens Multiply the basic fact, then write the zeros.

  1. 20×40=800
  2. 50×40=2,000
  3. 40×90=3,600
  4. 40×70=2,800
  5. 50×60=3,000
  6. 30×90=2,700
  7. 20×50=1,000
  8. 60×90=5,400
  9. 80×80=6,400

Part B: Hundreds times tens Multiply. Count the zeros in both factors.

  1. 900×60=54,000
  2. 200×70=14,000
  3. 200×20=4,000
  4. 800×50=40,000
  5. 50×400=20,000
  6. 900×50=45,000
  7. 80×500=40,000
  8. 90×300=27,000
  9. 500×40=20,000

Part C: 2-digit numbers times tens Multiply by the tens digit, then by 10.

  1. 41×70=2,870
  2. 18×90=1,620
  3. 15×40=600
  4. 49×60=2,940
  5. 47×70=3,290
  6. 32×80=2,560

Part D: Missing factor Write the missing multiple of 10.

  1. 50×30=1,500
  2. 70×30=2,100
  3. 70×90=6,300
  4. 20×80=1,600
  5. 80×60=4,800
  6. 60×20=1,200

Tips for teachers and parents

  • Teach the two steps: multiply the basic fact, then attach the zeros from both factors. For 40 x 30, 4 × 3 = 12, and two zeros make 1,200.
  • Explain why it works with mental math: 40 × 30 is 4 × 10 × 3 × 10, which is 12 × 100.
  • In Part C, multiply by the tens digit first, then by 10. 41 × 70 is 41 × 7 = 287, then 2,870.
  • For a missing factor, use the related division fact. 70 × ___ = 6,300: 63 ÷ 7 = 9, so the answer is 90.

Common mistakes

  • Dropping a zero when the basic fact already ends in zero. 50 × 40 is 2,000, with three zeros: one from 5 × 4 = 20 and two from the factors.
  • Writing too many zeros in a missing factor, such as 700 instead of 70. Check by multiplying back.

What to practice next

Use these facts as the partial products of 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication, or to estimate products by rounding.

Frequently asked questions

How do you multiply multiples of 10?

Multiply the nonzero digits, then write as many zeros as the two factors have together. 300 × 60 is 3 × 6 = 18 with three zeros: 18,000.

Why does multiplying tens by tens give hundreds?

Each ten is 10 ones, and 10 × 10 = 100. So 40 × 30 is 12 groups of 100, which is 1,200.

Is there an answer key?

Yes, page 2 of the PDF has the answers to all 30 problems.
