Tips for teachers and parents
- Four-digit problems are just more turns of the same loop. Remind students to keep going until every digit has been brought down.
- When the divisor does not go into the number after bringing down, write a 0 in the answer and bring down the next digit.
- Estimate first. 7360 ÷ 5 is a bit more than 7000 ÷ 5 = 1400, so an answer like 147 must be wrong.
- Lined paper turned sideways, or graph paper, keeps the columns straight in longer problems.
Common mistakes
- Skipping the 0 in answers like 2702, which gives 272 instead.
- Losing the place value: the number of digits in the answer should match the estimate.
What to practice next
In fifth grade, long division moves on to 2-digit divisors.
Frequently asked questions
Is 4-digit by 1-digit division a 4th grade skill?
Yes. The Common Core standard 4.NBT.B.6 asks fourth graders to divide numbers up to four digits by one-digit divisors.
Do any of the problems have remainders?
No. Every problem divides exactly, so the focus is on the longer process and on zeros in the answer.
Is there an answer key?
Yes, page 2 has every answer.
