Long Division 3-Digit by 1-Digit Worksheet
Twelve 3-digit numbers divided by 1-digit numbers, set out with the long division bracket and plenty of space for the work. Every problem divides exactly. Some answers have three digits and some have two, because the divisor does not always go into the first digit. The answer key is on page 2.

Tips for teachers and parents
- If the divisor is bigger than the first digit, look at the first two digits instead. In 174 ÷ 3, 3 does not go into 1, so start with 17.
- In that case the answer starts above the second digit. Leaving the space above the first digit empty keeps the place values lined up.
- Keep the loop going until every digit has been brought down: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down.
- Check answers by multiplying: the answer times the divisor should give the number you started with.
Common mistakes
- Writing a 0 or the wrong digit above the first digit when the divisor does not go into it, which shifts the whole answer by one place.
- Subtraction slips in the middle of the problem. Encourage neat columns and a quick check of each subtraction.
What to practice next
The next sheet adds remainders to 3-digit by 1-digit division.
Frequently asked questions
Why are some answers only two digits long?
When the divisor is bigger than the first digit of the number, the first step uses the first two digits, so the answer has one fewer digit. For example 441 ÷ 9 = 49.
Do any problems have remainders?
No, every problem divides exactly. The long division with remainders sheet is the next step.
Is there an answer key?
Yes, page 2 has every answer.
