Tips for teachers and parents
- The division ends when there are no more digits to bring down. Whatever is left after the last subtraction is the remainder.
- The remainder must always be smaller than the divisor. If it is not, the last digit of the answer can go up by one.
- Check each answer: quotient × divisor + remainder should equal the starting number. For 490 ÷ 9 = 54 R 4, 54 × 9 + 4 = 490.
- Talk about what a remainder means in real life: 490 stickers shared among 9 children gives 54 each, with 4 left over.
Common mistakes
- Stopping too early and calling a number a remainder before every digit has been brought down.
- Leaving the remainder out of the answer, or writing it as a decimal digit, like 54.4.
What to practice next
Students who manage these comfortably are ready for 4-digit by 1-digit long division.
