Long Division 2-Digit by 1-Digit Worksheet
A first long division sheet. Twelve 2-digit numbers divided by 1-digit numbers, written with the long division bracket and with room under each one for the work. Every problem divides exactly, and every one needs a remainder carried down at least once, so students practice the full divide, multiply, subtract, bring down cycle. The answer key on page 2 shows each quotient.

Tips for teachers and parents
- Teach the four steps as a loop: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down. Some families add "check" as a fifth step.
- Start with the tens digit. For 84 ÷ 7: 7 goes into 8 once, 1 × 7 = 7, 8 − 7 = 1, bring down the 4 to make 14, 7 goes into 14 twice. The answer is 12.
- Write each digit of the answer directly above the digit you just divided into. Lining up the columns prevents most mistakes.
- Students need their multiplication facts. If they stop to count on fingers at every step, spend a few days on the times tables first.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting to bring down the next digit and dividing the remainder on its own.
- Writing a remainder that is bigger than the divisor. If the subtraction leaves a number bigger than the divisor, the digit in the answer was too small.
What to practice next
When this feels easy, move on to 3-digit by 1-digit long division.
Frequently asked questions
What grade learns long division?
Most US students learn long division in fourth grade. The Common Core standard 4.NBT.B.6 covers dividing up to 4-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers.
Do any of these problems have remainders?
No. Every problem on this sheet divides exactly, so students can focus on the steps. Remainders come in a later sheet.
Is there an answer key?
Yes, page 2 has the answer to every problem.
