Tips for teachers and parents
- Use "double it, then divide by 10." For 45 ÷ 5, double 45 is 90, and 90 ÷ 10 is 9.
- Count by 5s and keep track of how many counts: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 is five counts, so 25 ÷ 5 = 5.
- Use money: 35 ÷ 5 is how many nickels make 35 cents, which is 7.
- In Part C, the missing number always ends in 0 or 5. Students can use this to catch slips.
Common mistakes
- Dividing by 10 instead of 5, so 40 ÷ 5 becomes 4. Check by multiplying back: 4 × 5 is 20.
- Losing count when skip-counting past 30. Anchor on 5 × 6 = 30 and count on from there.
What to practice next
Move on to dividing by 10, then use the 5s and 10s to practice the mixed division facts review.
