2 Digit by 2 Digit Multiplication Word Problems

This 4th grade sheet has 8 word problems, and every one multiplies a 2-digit number by a 2-digit number. The stories cover equal groups, rows and columns, rates such as miles each week, one area problem and two "times as many" comparisons. No number ends in zero, so each problem needs two partial products.

Tips for teachers and parents

  • Have the student write the multiplication sentence before solving. For "28 rows with 13 trees in each row" the sentence is 28 × 13 = ?.
  • Estimate first by rounding both numbers to the nearest ten. 28 × 13 is about 30 × 10 = 300, so an answer of 364 makes sense.
  • Any written method is fine: the standard algorithm, partial products or an area model. Ask the student to show the two partial products.
  • In the area problem, the length and width are the two factors, and the answer is in square units (square feet or square inches).

Common mistakes

  • Adding the two numbers in a comparison story. Have the student read the sentence aloud: the uncle has 13 times as many cards, not 13 more cards.
  • Forgetting the zero placeholder in the second partial product, which makes the answer far too small. Comparing with the estimate catches it.

Frequently asked questions

What are 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication word problems?

They are double digit multiplication word problems: stories in which both numbers have two digits, such as 28 rows of 13 trees. Students multiply them with two partial products, as in Common Core standard 4.NBT.B.5.

What kinds of multiplication story problems are on this sheet?

Equal groups, rows and columns, rates, one area problem and two "times as many" comparisons (4.OA.A.2). Every problem is a single multiplication.

Is there an answer key?

Yes, page 2 of the PDF gives the answer to all 8 problems.
