Tips for teachers and parents
- Ask your student to estimate first. For 67 × 8, about 70 × 8 = 560, so an answer near 536 makes sense.
- "Times as many" stories compare two amounts. Have students say the sentence aloud: "the tower is 4 times as tall as the tree."
- Students can solve with the standard algorithm, partial products or an area model. Any method that shows the work is fine.
- For the 2-digit by 2-digit problems, remind students to line up the two partial products before adding.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting to add the regrouped digit, which makes the answer too small by a ten or a hundred. Checking against the estimate catches this.
- Adding the two numbers in a "times as many" problem. Ask: is the second amount a few more, or several times bigger?

Frequently asked questions
What size numbers are in these multiplication word problems?
2-digit and 3-digit numbers times a 1-digit number, and two problems with two 2-digit numbers. No number ends in zero, so every problem needs real multiplication.
What is a "times as many" word problem?
A multiplicative comparison: one amount is a number of times as large as another. It is a separate grade 4 standard (4.OA.A.2).
Is there an answer key?
