Tips for teachers and parents

  • Start with the quarters: 25, 50, 75. Knowing those three numbers by heart makes the rest much easier.
  • Then count on by 10s for dimes, 5s for nickels and 1s for pennies. For 1 quarter, 2 dimes and 1 penny say "25, 35, 45, 46."
  • Counting on from 25 or 35 by 10s is harder than from 0. Practice "25, 35, 45, 55" out loud a few times.
  • Let students circle or tick each coin as they count it.

Common mistakes

  • Counting a quarter as 20 or as 5. Remind students that a quarter is worth 25 cents, the most of these coins.
  • Losing track in the mixed-up groups. Encourage students to find and count all the quarters first, then the dimes, and so on.

What to practice next

Students who count coins quickly can move on to counting dollars and coins together.

Frequently asked questions

Does every problem have a quarter?

Most of them do. A few use only dimes, nickels and pennies for review.

Are the coins real pictures?

No. Each coin is a simple circle labeled with its value. Practice with real coins too, so students learn to recognize them.

Is there an answer key?

Yes, page 2 has every total.
